Carl Hampton serves as Vice President of Government Relations and Policy at One City Schools in Madison, Wisconsin, where he champions innovative education initiatives and advocates for policies that benefit students and the community. Appointed to this role in late 2023, Hampton brings over two decades of experience in public policy, government relations, and education leadership to advance One City's mission of seeding a new model of public education.
Prior to joining One City Schools, Hampton held several distinguished leadership positions in higher education, including serving as Senior Diversity & Inclusion Officer for the University of Wisconsin System from 2016 to 2020, where he worked directly with the System President to advance inclusive excellence across all 26 UW campuses. As Chief of Staff to the Vice Provost & Chief Diversity Officer at UW-Madison from 2011 to 2016, he managed a $20 million annual budget and led initiatives to improve retention and graduation rates for students of color while fostering a more inclusive campus environment.
Hampton's extensive background in public service includes key roles in state and local government. He served as a Policy Advisor in Governor Jim Doyle's administration, Assistant Dane County Executive under Kathleen Falk, and Legislative Aide to U.S. Senator Russ Feingold. In these positions, he demonstrated his talent for building bridges between policymakers and communities, successfully advocating for economic development initiatives and social justice reforms. His work included establishing the Dane County Racial Disparities Task Force and protecting critical federal funding for community development programs.
A graduate of Stanford University with a degree in Political Science and the University of Wisconsin Law School, Hampton combines his legal expertise with a deep commitment to educational equity. His leadership philosophy emphasizes collaborative problem-solving and a belief that effective policy can transform communities for the better. In his current role at One City Schools, Hampton works alongside founder and CEO Kaleem Caire to secure legislative support for the school's innovative educational model and growth plans, while helping to establish One City Advocates, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to improving PreK-16 education through advocacy and public policy.
